Britain’s flights: after the fix

The flight-processing system was stable again. The journeys depending on it were not.

Passengers wait beside cancelled departures while a clearly dated September 8 Gatwick scene recalls a three-hour wait aboard an aircraft.

NATS identified the affected component, not the initiating cause. Its September 9 update said operations were stable while airlines and airports continued recovering.

Background from 2023: one unusual flight plan caused protective stops in both primary and backup processors; this is not the established 2026 cause.

The 2023 review exposes a resilience trap: a backup can receive the same problematic input. It explains why redundancy matters, but it does not diagnose the 2026 incident.

Aircraft and crews remain out of position after a system recovery; the CAA announces an independent review.

Delayed flights displaced aircraft and crews, so later departures inherited the disruption. On September 9, the CAA announced an independent review; the precise trigger remained unconfirmed.

Decades of Mystery. 88 Hours of AI.. Top story edition for Sep 8, 2026.

On September 8, OpenAI published a proposed Navier–Stokes proof. These equations describe fluid motion, but showing whether smooth three-dimensional motion can break down resisted mathematicians for decades. Simulations test examples; a proof must establish its claims without hidden exceptions. The challenge is controlling intensifying motion despite viscosity’s smoothing effect.

Decades of Mystery. 88 Hours of AI., chapter 2.

OpenAI reports roughly 10,000 concurrent agents exploring different approaches, using tools and sharing intermediate results. Researchers consolidated promising insights. A result on the related Euler equations helped guide the search. The distinctive workflow was coordinated exploration and recombination—not one chatbot producing an answer in a single response.

Decades of Mystery. 88 Hours of AI., chapter 3.

The claimed construction uses a smooth external force and a narrowing vortex: peak speed grows without bound while energy stays bounded. This is a mathematical model’s breakdown, not real water moving infinitely fast. OpenAI reports 88 hours to its resolution and another 17 for formalisation and checking. Lean is software that checks encoded logical steps. This is a proposed result, not a prize award or a controlled demonstration that AI universally outperforms human mathematicians. Faster discovery through people, AI and formal verification is the possibility—not a settled conclusion.

Hubble and Webb find clues to the solar system’s past beyond Neptune

Twenty-seven newly discovered icy worlds offer clues to how planets formed—and how much of that history survives.

Tiny worlds that remember: Hubble and Webb study 27 newly discovered icy objects beyond Neptune, among the smallest and faintest directly observed.

Hubble’s visible-light observations and Webb’s infrared measurements reveal clues to these distant objects’ surfaces. These trans-Neptunian objects are remnants of planet-building; the smallest observed was about five kilometres across.

The solar system’s frozen archive: cold populations follow nearly circular orbits; hot populations follow more disturbed paths. Visible and infrared colours offer clues to surface composition.

The small worlds resemble their larger relatives in colour, despite expectations that collisions would change their surfaces. “Hot” and “cold” describe their orbits, not their temperatures. Their shared signatures may preserve clues to where they formed.

The surprise: small objects retain colour relationships seen in larger worlds. Fewer collisions or preservation of original material could explain the result; the reason remains unresolved.

Researchers also found fewer tiny bodies than some models predicted. Together, their numbers and colours help test how planets began. Why these small worlds retain their signatures remains an open question.
