Shortly after midnight on September 15, NATO fighters destroyed an unidentified drone that entered Lithuanian airspace near Pratkūnai and the Kaunas Reservoir. Lithuanian authorities described it as the first drone shootdown in the country’s airspace.

The incident activated a chain built for minutes: radar detection, tracking, public warnings, fighter interception and recovery of the wreckage. Authorities temporarily restricted airspace and told nearby residents to remain indoors while investigators searched the area.

Officials said the drone likely entered from Belarus, but its origin, operator and purpose had not been established. Early reports about a possible payload conflicted, making examination of the recovered wreckage central to determining what crossed the border and why.
